How to Change Your Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers wiping raindrops

Between snowy winters in Issaquah and rainy spring months in Bellevue, windshield wipers certainly work hard in the Snoqualmie area. And over time, all the harsh weather and salt can cause major damage to your blades. How do you determine when to change the wipers on your car? The team at North Bend Chevrolet is here to walk you through the warning signs, and we’d be happy to show you how to change your windshield wipers in your own garage!

Do I Need to Change Wipers, or Just Clean Them?

We recommend pulling your windshield wipers up from the windshield from time to time to check out the rubber blades. If you notice dirt and debris, you can usually clean those particles and your blades should be good as new. But if you notice damage, then it’s time to change your wipers. Here are some of the telltale signs of damaged windshield wiper blades:

  • Cracked Rubber
  • Separated Blades
  • Screeching Noise
  • Gaps in Windshield Clearing
  • Scratches to Windshield Glass
  • Loose chunks of blade

How Do I Change Wipers at Home?

If it’s time for a replacement set of windshield wipers, you have two options. You can schedule a service at our service center, and let our technicians handle the job for you. Many drivers like to bundle this service with other maintenance items to make the most of their visit.

However, you can easily learn how to change windshield wipers at home. Check your owner’s manual to find the right size for your model, and then visit our parts department or order parts online. Once you have the correct size in hand, follow these steps to learn how to change your windshield wipers:

  1. Pull your windshield wipers upright and away from the windshield.
  2. Read the instructions on your windshield wiper’s packaging. Usually, you’ll need to depress a tab to remove the old wipers or just slide the old wipers off.
  3. Discard the old wiper blades.
  4. Clean your windshield thoroughly.
  5. Install the new windshield wipers by doing the reverse of steps two and three.
  6. Carefully return your windshield wipers to their regular position.
